The olympics began more than 3,000 years ago! The olympics were held every four years in Olympia, Greece. They were held to honor the god, Zeus. But after that they ended for 1,500 more years! Then finally, in 1896 they started back up again. Almost 250 athletes from 14 nations came in to play in 43 different events. This also was held every four years. But there were no games during the two world wars.
Fun fact: There is a story that Hercules, the son of Zeus started the games. How the olympic games started in 1896: After 1,500 years, French leaders began to feel the importance of physical education. In 1892 there was a meeting in Paris that started it all. They made the rules and launched the games. Olympics today are defintiley not what they were 3,000 years ago, but that might be a good thing. But we still get everyone together to watch in person or on tv. But that's some history! Comments are closed.
